Matti Wuori, Finnish ICDC Member dies, age 60
2005-10-21 / Max Berre
Matti Wuori was member of the ICDC, and an accomplished human rights and environmental lawyer, and a former member of the European Parliament. As a strong believer of the role of NGOs in society, Wuori served on the boards of more than a dozen NGOs.
In his function as a human rights lawyer, Wuori served on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 1996 until 1998. A keen environmentalist as well, Wuori was the director of Greenpeace International from 1991 to 1993. He also served as a Member of the European Parliament, representing the Green League from 1999 to 2004. On October 15, 2005, Wuori lost his prolonged battle with cancer. ICDC loses not only a friend, but an invaluable and irreplaceable member of its committee.
