2005-10-27 / Max Berre
The ICDC would like to extend its congratulations to the Ladies in White after the presentation of the 2005 Sakharov Prize by the European Parliament. The Ladies in White have become known for their non-violent protests against the imprisonment of their family members at the hands of Castro’s regime, as well as their public disapproval of said regime. The Ladies in White have also reached international attention, even leading to the establishment of the International Committee of Women for Democracy in in Buenos Aires earlier this year.
Named after the Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is awarded each year by the European Parliament to honor individuals and organizations for their efforts on behalf of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Also being awarded the Sakharov Prize in 2005 are the French media rights organization Reporters Without Borders, and Nigerian journalist Hauwa Ibrahim.
