2004 Rafto Prize nomination for Oswaldo Payá
2004-01-01 /
In 2004, Oswaldo Paya was nominated for the Rafto Peace Prize for his dedication in the fight for human rights in Cuba, in particular concerning the establishment of the Varela Project, a movement that aims to bring democratic change to Cuba through a referendum on political and economic reforms. The Prize is awarded every year in memory of Norwegian professor Thorolf Rafto. His nomination received the full support of ICDC members plus politicians, intellectuals and former presidents.

The prize represents the promotion of the fundamental rights of intellectual and political freedom and free enterprise. In addition to recognizing the work of Mr Payá, the nomination also demonstrated support for the entire Varela Project and the Cuban democratic movement, and to raise awareness of the situation in Cuba.
