The Cuba Project

The People in Need Organization has long been involved in supporting the Cuban dissident movement and the independent journalists on the island, both on its own and in co-operation with international organisations. Since 1997, more than 100 individuals that co-operate with PIN continue to distribute medicines and technical and financial support to dissidents, to family members of imprisoned individuals and to the sick. PIN collaborators also gather first-hand information on the situation in Cuba during their visits.

Shortly after the represive campaign carried out by Fidel Castro in March 2003, during which 75 pacific oppositionists were arrested, People in Need organized a visit to Cuba by Prague's auxiliary bishop and former Czechoslovak dissident, Vaclav Maly. Besides meeting with the main oppositionists to the Havana regime, Maly took advantage of the occassion to deliver a message of hope to the relatives of those imprisoned by Fidel Castro.

PIN also coordinates the agenda of the Czech-Cuban Committee, whose members are well known Czech citizens, such as Vaclav Maly; MP Svatopluk Karasek; Karel Schwarzenberg, senator; Ivan Pilip, the former Czech Finance Minister that was once imprisoned by Fidel Castro, representatives of the press and well-known businesspeople, among others. The main objective of the Czech-Cuban Committee is to start an adoption program for the families of political prisoners.
