People in Need in the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations

2005-04-05 / Roisin Joyce

On April 4, People in Need participated in a panel discussion in the Palace of Nations where the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations in Geneva was discussing point 9 of the Commission's Agenda. Also participating in the event was the Czech ambassador to the United States Martin Palouš, via telephone from Havana Cuban dissidents Oswaldo Payá and Vladimiro Roque, members of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Polish Senator Zbigniew Romaszewski and representatives of the Cuban exile and international NGOs.

In addition, the photo-documentary 'It is our problem too' was presented before an audience of more than 50 people, mostly members of the NGOs and delegations that participated in the meeting of the Commission, and a short speech was presented concerning the international support and solidarity of the Czech Republic to the Cuban democratic opposition. The exhibition examines the lives of the women and mothers of the 75 Cuban dissidents, activists, writers and librarians arrested and sentenced by the Castro regime in the spring of 2003.
