Jose Maria Aznar and Luis Alberto Lacalle take part in GHCC forum, Washington
2005-04-10 / Roisin Joyce
From April 7-9, ICDC members José María Aznar and Luis Alberto Lacalle took part in the Georgetown and Harvard Cuba conference (GHCC), an academic forum organized by Harvard University Cuban American Undergraduate Student Association and Georgetown University Cuban American Student Association.
The forum was composed of scholarly panels with the goal of facilitating dialogue on the future of Cuba’s political, economic and social systems. Panel issues included the history of Castro’s regime and Cuba’s internal and exile pro-democratic movements; how to apply lessons learnt from transitions to democracies in relation to the future of Cuba; international solidarity for both the Castro regime and Cuban pro-democratic movements; and a retrospective analysis of the role of youth movements in transitions to democracies. As part of the forum, on April 9, a conference call took place with Cuban pro-democratic leaders, including Oswaldo Payá, the founder of Movimiento Cristiano Liberacion; Vladimiro Roca, founder of Cuba’s Social Democratic Party; Berta Antunez, president of Pedro Luis Boitel National Civic Resistance Movement and Dagoberto Valdes, editor of Vitral.
