ICDC delegates Karel Schwarzenberg and Arnold Vaatz travel to Cuba

ICDC members Karel Schwarzenberg and Arnold Vaatz traveled to Cuba on the 14th May for 1 week to examine the situation of human rights in Cuba and to meet with various representatives of the Cuban democratic opposition, with former political prisoners and with wives of present political prisoners. Mr Schwarzenberg and Mr Vaatz were introduced during the trip as representatives of the ICDC who wanted to express ICDC‘s support for democratic dissident on the island and who wanted to report to other members of the committee concerning the situation in Cuba.

Meetings included those with Oswaldo Payá, Christian Liberation Movement; Oscar Espinoza Chepe, independent economist and political prisoner released on parole; Gisela Delgado, Havana coordinator of the Independent Libraries project and Dagoberto Valdes, the Director of the Civic and Religious Education Centre in Pinar del Rio. ICDC members were also able to meet briefly with the Ladies in White, Vladimiro Roca (leader of the Cuban Social Democratic Party), René Goméz and Félix Bonné (two of main organizers of the Assembly to Promote Civil Society) at the Norwegian embassy.
