Václav Havel to the decease of Jeane J. Kirkpatrick. New York, 8 December 2006

With a deep sorrow, I acknowledged the passing of Jeanne J. Kirkpatrick. It was a woman of firm attitudes to whom the world behind the Iron curtain was not indifferent and who had a great deal of merit in the collapse of communism in the Central and Eastern Europe. It was a woman who stood, till the end of her fruitful life, by all those who are fighting for freedom and human rights.
For her merits, she was awarded a state decoration of my country, the First Class of the Tomas Garrigue Masaryk Order, in 1998.
