Repression of a peaceful march on Human Rights Day

2006-12-11 / Pauline Boyer

A peaceful, silent march organized by Dr. Darsi Ferrer and opposition groups on International Human Rights Day, 10 December, was interrupted by about 200 sympathizers of the Cuban regime.

During the days leading up to the march, various people had been arrested and threatened in order to dissuade them from attending the demonstration. During the march, Castrist groups began by insulting the participants, then attacking them physically and removing some of them by force from the park where it was taking place. Foreign Affairs Minister Felipe Pérez Roque called the march a provocation which has received a clear response from our people, who are the owners of their streets.
